TUTOR: Roland Moore is a writer and series creator working in audio, TV and film. For TV, Roland recently wrote the supernatural drama series FALLEN (AMC in the States 2025) and previously created the award-winning returning period drama LAND GIRLS (BBC1). He adapted the sci-fi drama HUMANS (C4) as a 30 part series for China, making it the first ever science fiction drama shown on Chinese TV. He has written for DOCTORS (BBC1), WAYBULOO, RASTAMOUSE, MEEOW, and PETER RABBIT. Roland’s audio work includes a consultancy as creative lead for a new drama app, advising and offering story and script advice on titles written for the UK market. He has also written many dramas for Big Finish Productions, including DOCTOR WHO, SURVIVORS, TIMESLIP and THE AVENGERS.

Outline of our Science Fiction & Fantasy Writing Course
Week One – Core of Story and Finding Yours
In this module, we’ll explore the foundation of science fiction and fantasy genres. We’ll discuss what makes them unique and intriguing, including the tropes that define these genres. Together, we’ll find the core of your story, identifying your purpose and your spark of inspiration that drives you to write.
Week Two – Characters
This week, we dive into the essentials of character building. You’ll learn how to create your main character and design their quest or journey, focusing on what makes them compelling and relatable within your story world.
Week Three –World-Building
We’ll explore the art of creating a mythological world for your story. We’ll focus on the most important elements of world-building, helping you shape a setting that enhances and supports the narrative of your science fiction or fantasy story.
Week Four – Outlining & the First Page
Whether you’re a planner or a pantser, having a structure to guide your story is essential. In this module, we’ll cover how to create an outline and how to approach your first chapter and first 10 pages, ensuring you start your story off strong.
Week Five – Immersion of Your World – Your Practice
Follow your outline, but remember that it’s a tool to help you when you encounter challenges in your writing process. In this module, you’ll be encouraged to take notes of ideas and thoughts as you go along, so you can keep refining your story and refer back to your notes when needed.
Week Six – The Next Steps
In the final module, we’ll address important mindsets for moving forward with your writing. We’ll discuss traditional vs self-publishing options, marketing your book, the editing process, and the submission process to prepare you for the next stage of your journey.
