Course Outline
The Children’s Poetry Writing Course is designed to introduce your child or class to creative
writing poems. It contains several exercises and tips to encourage children’s creative writing and
offers the opportunity, over the course of six lessons, for a child to design and write poems in
several styles of their own. This course is primarily designed for children aged between 7 and 12.
Lesson 1: Starting Writing
The first lesson introduces your child to some of the fundamental creative writing skills. With
activities designed for children who have never written creatively before, it guides the participant
through the first steps of designing their own poems
Lesson 2: What is a Poem?
The second lesson looks specifically at the child participant’s favourite poems. It asks them to
think about why they like them and give them a chance to write similar poems themselves!
Lesson 3: Poems About You
The third lesson asks the child to write a poem about themselves. They will learn about how to
use their senses in their poetry, and other advice that applies to writing characters in poetry,
such as how to use local phrases and how to give their characters motivation.
Lesson 4: Visual Poetry
The fourth lesson teaches the child how to write about places in their poems. They will learn how
to use their senses and use all the tips discussed in the previous lessons to describe fictional and
non-fictional places.
Lesson 5: Story Poems
The fifth lesson teaches the child how to write stories in their poems. It teaches them how to
write dialogue in their poems and how to create tension.
Lesson 6: Creative Poems
The final lesson teaches the child how to write different creative forms of poetry, such as how to
write shape poems and comedy poems.
