Leanne O’Sullivan comes from the Beara peninsula in West Cork. She received an MA in English from University College, Cork in 2006. The winner of several of Ireland’s poetry competitions, including the Seacat/Poetry Ireland, Davoren Hanna and RTE Rattlebag Poetry Slam, she has published two collections, both from Bloodaxe, Waiting for My Clothes (2004) and Cailleach; The Hag of Beara (2009). In 2009 she was awarded the Ireland Chair of Poetry Bursary Award, nominated by Professor Michael Longley and in 2010, the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature.

This online poetry course is for those who would like to begin to write poetry or those who would like to develop poems they have already started. The main aim is to encourage and support new writers through discussion, exercises and free writing. We will look at a different topics such as how imagery works to make the foundations of a poem; how we use subtlety and nuances to give our poems certain feelings of tones; how to use metaphors effectively to enliven and make the language of our poems more unusual; how we can lend our ear to the music within free verse and become more sensitive to the words we choose.
