This online creative writing course for children is suitable for 7-9 year old students. (If you are an adult and would like to write for children or young adults, you might like one of our other courses, such as the Writing for Children course or Beginners Creative Writing course).

The course is one-to-one and is carried out through email correspondence. The student doesn’t have to be online at a particular day or time.

It is divided up into six modules (six weeks). The student will be given weekly notes, tips and exercises to help them. There is one exercise every week. Each exercise will be read by the tutor and the student will receive written feedback. However, the main thing is for the student to have fun when writing!

The first week will look at the importance of reading. We’ll also look at the five senses, sight, sound, touch, taste and smell and the importance of observation when writing.

In the second module we’ll talk about characters. The notes and exercises will allow students to build a character including a physical description, background, interests, dislikes, etc.

In the third week, we’ll have a look at setting. If you think of a character in a book, they are in a setting, in a certain place or time. This module will show students how to use a setting for a story.

Module 4 will examine plot and endings. When you’re writing, there will be a plot, with a beginning, middle and end. Readers will want to find out what happens to the characters. We will also examine endings, which can often be the most difficult part of a story.

In the fifth week, we’ll look at dialogue. Students can then practice writing a conversation between two characters.

We’ll look at how to revise a story in the final week.

“My boy took your writing course for children. His writing has improved so much that he has been getting consistently higher marks for his schoolwork. This one got read out by his teacher in class recently. I am sure you can see him applying your dialogue and description tips! I just want to say thank you very much!” Stephenie Lee.
