Topics covered will include:

(1) Introduction – In this first module, we’ll look at how to find ideas, the importance of observation and the power of memory. We’ll also look at  establishing a writing routine and the importance of reading.

(2) Characterisation – Characters are often the reason we read in the first place and we need someone to identify with. In this module we’ll examine what makes successful characters in fiction.

(3) Point of View. Every piece of writing comes from a particular point of view and one of the most important things you must decide upon is that of person.

(4) Plot and Endings. Whatever you’re writing, there will be a plot – something must happen to your characters. We will also examine endings and some do’s and don’t’s!

(5) Dialogue, Settings. In this module we will look at dialogue and provide some tips and suggestions as to how to write effective dialogue. We’ll also look at setting, the relationship between settings and character.

(6) Revision and Getting Published. In the final module, we will look at how to revise and improve your writing and how to get your work into print.

“It has always been a dream of mine to write a novel but down through the years, my dream slipped away from my grasp. From the very first module, I was hooked. I became so much more aware of the world and the magic surrounding me. Every suggestion in the course became inspiration, including my tutor, Olive. I truly appreciated her feedback, her simple yet effective edits, her guidance and support. Not only has my writing vastly improved but my journey as a writer has begun again. After taking the first step, I know this time, my dream won’t slip away and for that I am truly grateful. ” Tina, Cork.

“As someone with great aspirations of being a writer, without actually doing much about it, this 6 week course was just what I needed to get me going. You could really let your imagination run amok and see what you came up with. The emphasis was on having fun and Olive was a brilliant tutor, giving lots of praise but also insights and tips on how to make your story better. It definitely brought out my inner artist! Having a tutor read your work is invaluable…Taking the course gave me confidence in my writing and I’ve now signed up to the children’s writing course with Oisin.” Valerie

“I had been thinking about starting writing for a long time but just hadn’t done anything serious about it before. The course was absolutely fantastic, it was structured very well and gave a great introduction on how to formulate and write good stories. The exercises were interesting and challenging, and they helped me learn about the varying aspects of creative writing whilst getting my own creative juices flowing. I have come out of the other side of the course re-energised and feeling that I’ve found my true passion in life – writing! Olive is very helpful and provides you with great constructive feedback and support. I am so glad I enrolled on this course and I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about starting writing.” James, Tasmania, Australia. (update – James has just published his first novel, The Rubble)
