Throughout this ten week course, which starts off at beginners level and continues to intermediate level, you will be given a multitude of exercises and tips that you will need to set your inner scribbler free. Each exercise will then be read by Adam and you will receive personal feedback. We’re not looking for masterpieces, just pieces that contain something of your own creativity.

The course will be key in discovering your own unique voice as a writer and for furthering and strengthening that voice. We will also look at pieces of literature from the inside, discover what makes these pieces work and then do imitation exercises. In addition to exercises for beginners, the intermediate section will concentrate on plotting, characterisation, angle and conflict for fiction – along with developing your skills in editing and redrafting.

You’ll be encouraged to write as much as possible, keep a note book with you and to create a daily writing routine (preferably in the morning when the mind is most active and fresh.) You will also be encouraged to widen your reading habits. All great writers are also great readers and Adam will suggest various books and anthologies for you to read.

The course will include:

- Speed writing or stream-of-consciousness writing
- Finding your voice
- Keeping it symbol
- Plotting and shaping a short story or novel
- Characterization, conflict and angle
- Avoiding cliché and then subverting cliché
- Tackling poetry forms
- Looking at metaphor and simile
- Rewriting, editing, polishing
- Using literature as models and springboards for writing

And much more!

“I thoroughly enjoyed the course. I was a writing novice before I started this creative writing journey. Through a series of fun exercises, as well as constructive and encouraging feedback from Adam, the course equipped me with the skills and self-belief to continue writing into the future. Each exercise was an adventure and a revelation. I learned how to unlock the creative side of my brain with speed writing and harmonise it with the analytical side with regard to objective editing of my own work. I have already started to develop some of the pieces of writing which I began during the course and have also crafted new pieces of work. I feel quite fortunate to have discovered a new creative outlet as a writer!” Róisín, Co. Cork
